St Paul's Church

The Earl of Darnley built Sandgate first 'Sandgate Episcopal Chapel' on a plot of land from his adjoining estate, where ST Pauls Church now stands, and this was consecrated on May 8, 1822. Sandgate was developing rapidly at that time, and when the railway reached Folkestone in 1843 a much larger church was needed.

The earlier building was demolished in 1848, and a new, larger church was completed the following year.

This new church with galleries and two decker seating could accommodate nearly 900 people and in 1888 became the parish church. Over the years, many improvements and additions have been made to the church, but the effects of the weather have seen the building deteriorate and remidial action is needed now.

The war memorial porch as added in 1919. A feature of the church is the fine decorative ceiling, the work of Charles Powell.

St Pauls - proposed restoration

St Pauls has provided a place of worship for the people of Sandgate for nearly 200 years, and we need to restore the church to enable it to continue and increase its ministry in the future.

  • Replacing the aureole windows on the north side - metal work severely corroded due to the action of sale, wind and rain.
  • Re-roofing the choir vestry
  • Rebuilding the kitchen with storage loft.
  • Extending the toilet block
  • New links between the church and the church hall with stairs and lift
  • Renovating the entrance porch where it has sunk
  • Complete redecoration of the interior
  • Create office in church
  • Replace the aureole windows on the south side - metal work severely corroded due to the action of sales, wind and rain.
  • Waterproof the south wall and replace the rainwater goods
  • Refurbishing and re roofing the vicars vestry
  • Replacing the stonework around the east and south windows and resetting the stained glass to make that end of the church weatherproof and avoid the need for umbrellas during inclement weather!
