| St Paul's Church
The Earl of Darnley built
Sandgate first 'Sandgate Episcopal Chapel' on a plot of land from
his adjoining estate, where ST Pauls Church now stands, and this was
consecrated on May 8, 1822. Sandgate was developing rapidly at that
time, and when the railway reached Folkestone in 1843 a much larger
church was needed.
The earlier building was demolished in 1848, and a
new, larger church was completed the following year.
This new church with galleries and two decker
seating could accommodate nearly 900 people and in 1888 became the
parish church. Over the years, many improvements and additions have
been made to the church, but the effects of the weather have seen
the building deteriorate and remidial action is needed now.
The war memorial porch as added in
1919. A feature of the church is the fine decorative ceiling, the
work of Charles Powell.
