Royal Kent Hotel | New Inn

79-83 Sandgate High Street

In 1801 Richard Marsh held what was at that time known as the New Inn, which it is claimed dates back to c1775. It is described in a newspaper as a highly respectable hotel and posting house (and) is situated in the main street. It possesses every desirable accommodation and the back-front in which the principal rooms are situated, commands a most extensive and delightful marine view, ..... the beds and general entertainment equally recommendatory, the charges moderate . . . Coaches call at this passing house daily, to and from London, and every part of the Kent and Sussex coasts.

As there were no local newspapers until 1855 details concerning the Inn are scant. John Ruskin is said to have been a regular visitor to the house, as was the actress Sarah Siddons.

In 1859 the hotel was entirely re-fitted and refurbished throughout, by which time it was known as The Kent Hotel. However the 1861 census shows that a William and Sarah Bartram had taken the place.

In the mid 1860's The Kent Hotel became known as The Royal Kent Hotel because it had been discovered Princess (later Queen) Victoria had stayed at the hotel with her mother.

Note: The Sandgate Society was founded by Mrs Ruby Estelle Greenwall, J.P., in 1962 in an attempt, though just too late to save the Royal Kent Hotel, formerly the New Inn, an ancient coaching inn, from demolition. It is now the site of the Sir John Moore Court.
