Drinking and fighting were not the only distractions for the soldiers; some sought solace not in the bottle but in the arms of the opposite sex, as seen from a report of 1890: A frightful state of immorality appears to prevail at Shorncliffe Camp. women haunt the locality by the scores and the information given to the Board of Guardians was absolutely shocking. The Military Hospital is full and the infirmary at the workhouse is burdened with similar cases. The Guardians have instructed their clerk to apply to the Commandant to order the military police to prevent females from sleeping about the camp. If found wandering about the roads without visible means of support, the police will be instructed to apprehend them.
