The Sandgate Society -
why we are here
The Sandgate Society was founded by Mrs Ruby Estelle Greenwall, J.P., in 1962 in an attempt, though just too late to save the Royal Kent Hotel, an ancient coaching inn, from demolition (now the site of the Sir John Moore Court). Founder members included Lola Lachlan, Dennis Vorley, Frank Norden, Mrs Joan Bennette, Mary Green and Mrs Linda Rene-Martin. The Society, independent and non-political, is dedicated to preserve, maintain and enhance the character and amenity of a village, rich in history and so pleasantly situated. The Committee deals with conservation matters, road traffic and parking problems and inappropriate developments. It forms a focus for village life, serves as in Information Centre and organises many social events. The society offers a range of activities – talks, social events and visits - a newsletter is published approximately four times a year. The Society is most fortunate in having its Headquarters in the picturesque Old Fire Station in Sandgate High Street. It is open each Saturday morning from 10.00 until 12.30. This houses a fascinating collection of Archives, Books, Postcards, Documents, Photographs etc . Should you, or anybody you know, like more details about the Society, please do not hesitate to contact any of the Society’s committee members at our Headquarters. |
